TREKKING SOUTH WEST CRETE

Day 1. Arrival at Chania, where we stay the first night.

Day 2. Departure by bus to Paleochora, arriving in the late morning after a splendid drive through the mountains.
After lunch we depart for our afternoon walk. From Kontiginiki we walk along a mountain ridge with stunning views in all directions. Walking down along a river in a small gorge we end up at the sea and our hotel.
Enough time to dive in the sea!
Walking time 3 hours - 200 m downhill

Day 3. Today we walk along the coast to Sougia.
A rather steep climb up brings us to a plateau. Following an old footpath zigzagging down we arrive at Lissos, the ancient Roman bathing place. Time for a picnic and a swim.
We continue walking for another two hours, first up, over a plateau and then down through a gorge to Sougia.
Walking time 6 hours - 400 m up and down

Day 4. On this day a short walk along the coast is planned.
We walk to the east as far as the chapel of Agios Antonis. We walk partly on old footpaths and through an area with a lot of pines and fir trees, unexpectedly green for the south coast!
We can decide to take a small boat back to Sougia.
Walking time 2x2 hours - 150 m up and down

Day 5. Today a full walking day to the plateau of Omalos.
We start in the green and lush gorge of Agia Irini, where we walk up 650 metres. After 3 hours walking we have our picnic under shady plane trees. Continuing on our way we walk along an age-old path, called the ´kings road' and we end our walk at an altitude of 1100 metres.
Walking time 7 hours - 1100 m uphill

Day 6. We will have an early start for the walk through the famous Samaria gorge, to avoid the crowds. At 18 km it is the longest gorge of Europe. At the end of the gorge we arrive in the village of Agia Roumeli. From here we take in the last boat of the afternoon, which brings us to the picturesque coastal village of Loutro.
Walking time 5 hours - 1200 m downhill

Day 7. Today there are choices. Either a beautiful walk along the south coast to Hora Sfakion, or upwards in the impressive Aradene gorge and back down to Loutro passing the village of Liviana. After that by boat or continuing on foot to Hora Sfakion. We 'll see the ruin of a Venetian castle built high above Loutro. In the gorge and during the coastal walk at certain places some climbing is involved. The path leads partly close to the water and partly along the rocky slope which ends in the sea. Walking time between 7 and 3 hours - max. 350 m up and down

Day 8. After an early breakfast, transfer by bus to Chania, where our trekking ends.
