Daily itinerary 8-day tour
CENTRAL CRETEDay 1
. Arrival at Heraklion airport, at the latest at 18:00 hours.
We drive by minibus to our first hotel in Amoudara
, a small suburb to the west of Heraklion.
. The walk today starts close to Archanes
, a village in the most famous wine-making region of Crete, where we also find excavations of Minoan graves.
Our walk leads us to the summit of Mount Youchtas
, symbol of the sleeping Zeus. We continue beside a river until we reach a beautiful Roman aqueduct.
Transfer to Zaros
, a village at the foot of Mount Ida.
. Today we start our shady walk at our hotel.
Passing an artificial lake where trout are bred, we continue walking to Agios Nikolaos Monastery. Then the path climbs up into the Rouvas gorge
, crossing the river many times till we arrive in the green and beautiful valley of the Agios Ioannis chapel.
After a picnic lunch we will slowly retrace our steps through the gorge to finish back at the hotel.
. Today we will have some more cultural aspects in our programme. We drive to the south where there is the opportunity to visit the excavation of the Minoan Palace of Festos
. The alternative is a walk to Agia Triada, with lots of flowers on the road verge.
In the afternoon a beautiful circular walk along the coast as well as high up above the village of Matala, where we will visit the caves at the end of the walk. Overnight stay in Sivas
. Today we walk in the mountains of Bouvala
Starting from Melambes we follow a high mountain ridge with spectacular views of the south coast and the Paximadi islands. Leaving Saktouria we take a different loop back to the foot of the mountain, partly along a riverbed.
There is the possibility of visiting the beach at Agios Pavlos
At the end of this day we transfer to Spili
, a lively mountain village 20 km south of Rethymnon.
. The village of Gianniou, the old and new monasteries of Preveli and the banks of the Megalopotamos river are ingredients of this circular walk. The views down to the river bed and later on over the Libyan sea are stunning.
We also descend to the palm beach of Preveli
. The walk today is through the Patsos Gorge
(also known as the Agios Adonis Gorge). A lovely, shady walk, with maybe still some water to go through and some clambering to be done!
We drive through the Amari valley and via Gerakari to the high plateau of Gious Kampos
and from there back to the village of Spili.
. After breakfast, transfer to Heraklion airport.
